Search the scriptures; for in them you think you have eternal life: and they are they which testify of Me.
-John 5:39

I had not given much thought to who the Lord Jesus really is until a couple of Jehovah’s Witnesses started visiting me on Saturdays last summer. I had accepted Jesus as my Lord and Saviour several years ago, but I had not done any in-depth study into the Deity of Christ. Prompted by some "reading material" they had left for me, I began researching my Bible to learn more about Him and to see if what the Jehovah’s Witnesses where telling me was true.

By no means am I endorsing the Jehovah’s Witnesses or The Watchtower Society. I have come to realize that the Watchtower Society is a cult that is to be avoided.

(For more information about Jehovah’s Witnesses and the Watchtower Society, take a look at http://www.geocities.com/paulblizard/.This site gives some very informative testimonies from ex-Jehovah’s Witnesses who are now Born Again brothers and sisters in Christ.)

However, these two visitors on those Saturdays with their Watchtower magazines was the ‘catalyst" that started me on my search. With much prayer and study, the following is what I have discovered so far about the Deity of our Lord Jesus.

God as man

And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. -Luke 2:8-14

Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. -Isaiah 7:14

Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. -Matthew 1:23

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. -Isaiah 9:6

The above verses detail God’s visit to us as a man. The man Christ Jesus. This baby Jesus born of a virgin was none other than God Himself, come to earth in the form of a man. How humble and humiliating this birth of our Lord was! He was wrapped in rags and placed in a feeding trough. He was born of poor Jewish parents and the poorest of the poor, the shepherds, where the first to gaze upon him.

Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. -Philippians 2:5-8

Only God could be so humble amid such temptation, even to His Crucifixion! How tempting it must have been for Him to come down from the cross! Think about the crushing pain, humiliation, suffering and torment He endured nailed to that cross (see a very good medical analysis of crucifixion at http://www.forerunner.com/mandate/X0040_A_Physician_Analyzes.html), as He knew full well that He was God with all the glory and power of God at His command. (Colossians 2:9, Matthew 26:53) As the crowd jeered and taunted Him, "Come down from the cross, and we will believe you"! "You saved others, now save yourself"! (Matthew 27:40-44, Mark 15:29-32, Psalms 22:6-8) Yet, He remained obedient to His death to pay for our sins. History has proven time and again how power can corrupt both men and angels, (Satan being a prime example Ezekiel 28:17) but Jesus was able to remain obedient because there is no iniquity in Him.

The Word

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. -John 1:1-3

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. -Genesis 1:1

In Genesis we read that God created heaven and earth, and the gospel of John tells us that the Word created all things. That God and the Word are one and the same is made evident by these two verses. God created everything by his Word. I.e. "And God said…." (Genesis 1:3, 6, 9, 11, 14, 20, 24, 26, 29)

And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. -John 1:14

The Word, who was with God and is God, became a man and His name was called Jesus. (Matthew 1:21, Luke 2:21, Revelation 19:13)

Intercessor

For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time. -1 Timothy 2:5&6

Peter tells us in his first letter to Timothy, there is only one God and this same one God became the intercessor between Himself and us. He did this by becoming a man. The man Christ Jesus. Because none of us is righteous, God, who is righteous, had to become a man and give Himself as a sacrifice to make atonement for our sins.

Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need. -Hebrews 4:14-16

In the Old Testament, it was the job of the High Priest to enter into the Holy of Holies once a year to make sacrifice and atonement for God’s people. (Exodus 30:10, Hebrews 9:7) He was the only person aloud to enter in, and even then, with much ritual cleansing and danger of death.

Today, the Lord Jesus is our High Priest who has made atonement for us by His blood and continuously makes intercession to God for us. (Hebrews 7:24&25) But there is more than that. Our High priest, the Lord Jesus Christ, is also the very God that sits on that throne of grace! He fills both rolls. The Lord Jesus is the dispensator of grace. (Hebrews 4:14-16)

God is longsuffering and full of grace. This is the reason why such seeming atrocities as we see in the news everyday are aloud to continue. God is sovereign, and must allow the evil to continue, giving us time to repent and turn to Him. However, God’s grace is finite and at some time and some place that only He knows, that last sinner will accept the Lord’s offer of salvation (Romans 11:25, 2 Peter 3:8-10) and our Lord Jesus will relinquish His throne of grace to take upon Him the throne of judgement.

Judge

For we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ. For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God. So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.
-Romans 14:11&12

For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad. -2 Corinthians 5:10

For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son. -John 5:22

Our Lord Jesus will one day soon sit upon the throne of judgement and every man and woman who has ever lived will stand before Him and give an account of what he or she has done while alive on earth. Whatever works or acts we have ever committed, whether good or evil, will be laid open and naked before Him. (1 Corinthians 3:11-15, 1 Peter 4:5&6, Revelation 20:12&15)

Knowing that our Lord Jesus Christ is God and that He alone is the dispensator of all grace and that He will soon take the throne of judgement, it is good for us to acknowledge Him as our Lord and Saviour now while His grace abounds. There is no other way for us to be saved. (John 14:6, Acts 4:12)

When Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, saying, "Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?" So they said, "Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets." He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" Simon Peter answered and said, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." Jesus answered and said to him, "Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. -Matthew 16:13-18

Finally, there is only one question that matters. One question we all must give an answer to. The same question our Lord asked His disciples. "But who do you say that I am?" Peter answers correctly in saying that Jesus is the Christ. All Mighty God come to us in the flesh. Jesus told Peter that this truth is spiritually discerned. It can not be known carnally, (flesh and blood) confirming His words in John 6:44 "No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him". Then He says to Peter that this "rock" or truth that has been given to him and to all believers is the very foundation of the church and this truth is immovable. Not by men or angels or even "the gates of hell". The truth, "this rock" is everlasting. The lord Jesus Christ is God in the flesh!

Therefore, it is paramount that we recognize who the lord Jesus is and accept His free gift of salvation NOW before the opportunity has slipped from our grasp. Please see the "Are you saved?" page to learn about God’s free gift of salvation.
