Wisdom is the principal thing.…
. . . therefore get wisdom: and with all thy
getting get understanding.
-Proverbs 4:7
Buy the truth, and sell it not; also
wisdom, and instruction, and understanding. -Proverbs
23:23
God places a very high value on wisdom,
knowledge and instruction. God’s word tells us, as we read in these verses
from Proverbs, wisdom is so valuable that we should sell everything we have to
obtain it. This does not mean worldly wisdom but Godly wisdom. (1
Corinthians 3:19)
The wisdom of knowing
God. His ways, His commandments, His values. (Colossians
1:9&10)
Hear, O my son, and receive my sayings;
and the years of thy life shall be many. I have taught thee in the way of
wisdom; I have led thee in right paths. When thou goest, thy steps shall not be
straitened; and when thou runnest, thou shalt not stumble. Take fast hold of
instruction; let her not go: keep her; for she is thy life. Enter not into the
path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men. Avoid it, pass not by it,
turn from it, and pass away. -Proverbs
4:10-15
How and where do we obtain wisdom?
If any of you lack wisdom,
let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally… -James 1:5
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of
wisdom. -Psalms 111:10
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of
knowledge. -Proverbs 1:7
The word "Fear" is translated
from the Hebrew word "Yir’ah" (yir-aw) which means reverence.
Reverence or respect for the Lord is where wisdom starts.
When we study God’s word, we should always pray first for understanding. Begin
your Bible studies with a prayer to God that he would give you understanding of
His word by the Holy Spirit and end your Bible study with a prayer of
thanksgiving.
But the Comforter, which is the Holy
Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, He shall teach you all things . . .
-John 14:26
Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a
workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
-2 Timothy 2:15
God’s will is that we study His
word. He wants us to know Him intimately!
If you want to know somebody intimately, you watch them, you study them, you
spend allot of time with them. You come to learn their likes and dislikes. What
makes them happy, what makes them sad. You come to know their ways and habits.
Like two best friends, you know each other intimately. Do this with our Father
in Heaven. He loves you. He wants to fellowship with you. He desires for you to
know Him intimately.
To know God intimately, you MUST study Him, talk with Him, spend time
with Him, read your Bible and pray. Studying God’s word is not a suggestion,
but a commandment. It is a shameful thing to say we are Christians and have
little or no knowledge of God. We should always be prepared to answer any
questions regarding our faith. If you read your Bible daily, study and pray, you
will have the answers.
But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an
answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with
meekness and fear. -1 Peter 3:15
I have attended some churches where the many of the people in the
congregation do not bring their Bible to church with them, and the ones that do,
do not bother to open them. They sit in the pews and listen to the pastor or
teacher as if just their presence alone is sufficient to meet the Lord’s
requirements. How can we know whether the pastor or teacher is teaching the word
of God unless we are following along in our Bibles and doing our
"homework"?
And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto
Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews. These were more
noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all
readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were
so. -Acts 17:10&11
We must learn to be like the Bereans who got out their copy of the scriptures
and checked out what Paul was telling them to see if it was true to God’s
word. Apathy and complacency are very common problems in our churches today,
especially here in the United States. We prefer that our pastors do all the work
for us. Granted, it is the shepherd’s job to feed and guard the flock, but
that does not give us license to be lazy, or slothful in our studies.
Our Holy Bible is the written word of God. It is our "litmus" test for
all things. DO YOUR HOMEWORK! Test every teacher, every doctrine, and every
spirit in light of God’s word. Do not be afraid to ask allot of questions
about everything. God tells us to TEST EVERYTHING!
Prove all things; hold fast that which is good. -1 Thessalonians 5:21
But he that is spiritual judgeth all things. -1 Corinthians 2:15
But why such diligence? Why should we strive to obtain this knowledge?
Therefore my people are gone into captivity, because they have no
knowledge … -Isaiah 5:13
Lest Satan should get an advantage of us … -2 Corinthians 2:11
Ignorance lends opportunity for others to take advantage of us! Especially
Satan, who is always seeking a way to deceive us, to spiritually
"shipwreck" us and keep us in bondage to sin. He will do everything he
can to keep us ignorant of God. If we are not in God’s word, then we are
ignorant of his devices. God has given us His written word. It is OUR
responsibility to read His word and learn of Him. Not our pastors’, not our
parents’, not our spouse’s.
There is more, however, than just possessing knowledge of God. Once wisdom,
knowledge, instruction, light and truth, to any degree, has been given to us
from God, it must be applied in our lives. We can either accept it or reject it,
but whatever we do with it, we now posses it and God does hold us accountable
for everything He gives us.
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and
unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; Because that
which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.
For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen,
being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and
Godhead; so that they are without excuse: Because that, when they knew God, they
glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their
imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. -Romans 1:18-21
My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected
knowledge, I will also reject thee... -Hosea 4:6
We are tremendously blessed here in the United States of America, because we
have God’s word readily available to us, uncensored by our government and we
can study and worship freely anytime we like. (Although, those rights are being
slowly whittled away) We are also blessed with some of the finest Bible teachers
in the world. (I have included many of them on my "Links" page) We, of
all people in this world, are without excuse.
In the remaining pages of this website, I will endeavor to share some of the
things I have come to understand from studying God’s word and praying daily
asking Him for discernment, wisdom and guidance. I pray that the Truth and Light
of God’s word would be made manifest to you by his Holy Spirit as you study
and learn of Him who is the one true God, our Creator and Saviour.
And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall
find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. For every one that asketh
receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be
opened.
-Luke 11:9&10
